“I want to play in the best league,” said Barbashev. (Matthew Murnaghan/Hockey Canada)

While at the NHL Combine, I had the chance to talk with draft prospect Ivan Barbashev of the QMJHL’s Moncton Wildcats. Russian-born, a lot of questions surrounded him coming into the combine and draft and whether he’ll stay in North America or head back to Russia to play in the KHL.

These questions just further an already ongoing debate between the NHL and KHL, their fans, and teams’ management. How can NHL franchises be sure that picking a Russian player will deliver an individual who wants to play in the NHL? Talking to Barbashev, he told me he wanted to play in the ‘best league in the world’ – a statement that’s been said before by other projected first round players.
