Colorado’s first loss of the season. Patrick Roy’s first loss as a National Hockey League head coach. And still, the Detroit Red Wings had something to worry about after the game.

Cody McLeod hammered Wings’ defenceman Niklas Kronwall into the sideboards. Although Kronwall admitted that it was something he could have avoided as the one being hit, McLeod received a five-game suspension for his hit. 

But more than that, the hit identified a rivalry that still exists between the Avalanche and the Red Wings. From Claude Lemieux and Kris Draper to Patrick Roy, Mike Vernon, and Chris Osgood, it’s a rivalry that has continued to grow with every meeting.
