There is no question that, by now, most hockey fans know about the line brawl between the Maple Leafs and the Sabres that happened last Sunday. From this, Leafs’ forwards Phil Kessel and David Clarkson received suspensions – Kessel for three preseason games and Clarkson for 10 regular season games. 

Now many saw Clarkson’s jumping from the bench as a selfish play – and to some extent maybe it was. But in many ways, Clarkson’s move favoured the Leafs’ progress as a team.
