The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

Warning: if you don’t understand how the CLASSIC horror story plot plays out don’t bother seeing this movie – its intelligent, clever, and a pleasure for those true horror story buffs to watch.

‘The Cabin in the Woods’, written by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Drew Goddard (Cloverfield), creates a whole new way of telling the classic horror story.  With Whedon’s oft-used tongue-and-cheek dialogue, there is an entertainment aspect that is rarely associated with horror flicks.

The growling familiarity within the cast – Kristen Connolly (Revolutionary Road), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Jesse Williams (Grey’s Anatomy), and Amy Acker (Angel) – helps the audience connect with their excellent portrayal of the classic horror film roles (the slut, the jock, the academic, the joker, and the virgin).  Again, played out in an interesting fashion – let’s call it Whedon-esque.

This Whedon-esque flick is arguably the cleverest and most entertaining film released as part of the horror genre in the last decade.

And although the end of the film leaves you with a “HUH?” kind of reaction, it doesn’t at all take away from the rest of the movie.

An absolute must-see for horror-buffs, I highly recommend this film to anyone who likes films that take a step outside of genre standards.

It’s a thinker… An absolute masterpiece that will keep you on the edge of your seat with the fear of the entertainment to come.
